Hidden Gems Movie Review: Lightning Bug (2004)

Updated: Mar 28

Lightning Bug might be one of the best movies you have never seen let alone heard of. Lightning bug was released in 2004 and was written and directed by Robert Hall, who worked on Buffy, The Vampire Slayer as a make up and special effects artist. This story is loosely based on Robert Hall's own life, growing up in rural Alabama as a teenager. Bret Harrison plays the lead character of Green, who is based on Robert Hall. Green is already learning the trade of makeup and special effects and dreams of someday moving to Hollywood to work in the movie industry, He decides to open a Haunted House in time for Halloween but runs into some obstacles as one of the local churches labels Green as a devil worshipper. Also, Green has a single mother played by Ashley Laurence(Kirsty from Hellraiser) who eventually marries an abusive man named Earl(played by Kevin Gage). This movie might not necessarily be a horror movie. It is more of a coming-of-age drama. But it is a movie that every horror fan can appreciate, relate too and enjoy, as the main character, himself is a horror fan and faces the same stereotypes, that many of us fans of horror have dealt with in the past. Even though Lightning Bug was a low- budget film, it doesn't feel low budget. The well-crafted and well-made movie is written and directed in a true professional and creative manner. The performances are terrific across the board. Also, in the cast is Laura Prepon(Donna from That 70's Show), who play's Green's girlfriend. This movie is an emotional roller coaster that will make you laugh, make you angry, sad and hopeful. Unfortunately, Lightning Bug is difficult to find on streaming services, which is a shame. I was able to locate it on You Tube, where you should be able to watch for free. I, myself, purchased a DVD copy from Ebay for less than $10.  I give Lightning Bug a 9 and of 10 and highly recomend any fan of horror to give it a watch.
